VACCINES... why they are imperative to public health

About CCHD

What do well and septic inspections, emergency preparedness, pertussis, flu vaccines, and No Smoking have in common? All fall under the umbrella of public health, and are only a small fraction of the services provided by the Cass County Health Department (CCHD). CCHD offers over 25 programs, and I frequently hear the comment “I had no idea that you did that” when discussing services of CCHD.

A common misconception about CCHD is that we only provide services to low income families. Most of our programs are available to all residents, regardless of their income level or payer source. In fact, 1 out of every 3 families in Illinois receive services from their local health department, including: WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children), family case management, childhood and adult immunizations, tobacco prevention and control, health education, access to health and dental care, services related to chronic diseases such as diabetes or asthma, family violence, injury prevention and farm safety, support for healthy lifestyle choices, and early cancer detection.

Cass County Health Department also offers several “non-traditional” public health services. I am very proud of our home health and hospice programs (Cass County Home Health Agency and Cass Schuyler Area Hospice) which are both Medicare-certified programs. Services are provided in Cass, Schuyler, Brown, Morgan, and Scott counties. Our hospice program is very fortunate to have 60 trained volunteers who assist our patients and their families while on our hospice program, and during the bereavement period.

We also offer primary medical care and dental care services through Cass County Health Clinic, located in both Virginia and Beardstown, and Cass County Dental Clinic, which together served over 4,000 patients in 2014. Both medical clinics as well as our dental clinic utilize a fully integrated Electronic Health Record. The Cass County Health Clinic has been recognized by NCQA as being a "Patient Centered Medical Home". Both clinics focus on giving quality care to patients across the age span.

The Cass County Health Department has been providing public health services to our community for over 30 years; it has been my privilege to lead the Cass County Health Department in “providing, protecting, and promoting” the health of our community.
